The pressure is on me again as soon as I shift the car into park and turn off the engine. I chose a spot a couple houses down, and as I look at the neighborhood, I’m wishing I had a dog right now. Because this looks like the kind of housing tract where there are only two types of pedestrians—people walking their dogs and criminals casing homes for potential targets.

Fuck it. Short of driving to the nearest dog shelter, there’s nothing to do about it, and I’ve never been a dog person anyway.

“Let’s go,” I tell Bo, and open my door to get out. Before I close it, I toss the keys to Yuri. “Shay’s done more than his share of the driving, so you’re it. Keep your eyes open, and be ready to take off if we come running.”

“Ma’am, yes ma’am,” Yuri replies with a smirk as he catches the keys.

“What’s the plan, or is there one?” Bo asks, as we stroll along the sidewalk.

“I’m going to walk around the property first and try to contact her. So just follow my lead, and if that doesn’t work, we’ll try the front door.”

“What do we say then?”

“I dunno,” I shrug. “I’ll figure that out when I have to.”

The sky is overcast with a high, thin cloud layer and there’s a light breeze, so it’s not too bad outside, and I maintain a slow, casual pace. I start reaching for his hand, so we can maintain the appearance of a couple out for an afternoon walk, then stop myself.

I really can’t encourage him by sending the wrong message, since I’ll be sending Bo away—once I figure out how to do it without hurting everyone. Or at least, as little hurting as possible, because I’ve come to recognize that he’s a decent guy. And I really, truly don’t want to hurt him.

But I have much bigger things to worry about, like saving our lives.

As we approach the edge of the Rosser property, I begin quietly calling to Angie, keeping my head turned toward Bo so any casual observer will think I’m talking to him.

“Angie, are you here? I talked to Bessie and now I need to talk to you. I’ll hear you, if you talk to me.”

To clear my mind of all distraction while walking, I close my eyes. I reluctantly hold onto Bo’s arm in order to maintain my equilibrium, and try to enter that meditative state of mind the yoga instructor taught, the one time I tried it. It was just one time, because I freaked out when I saw what she did with her auric energy, and never went back.

She instructed me to focus on my breathing, so I follow what I can recall of her guidance, but I don’t detect even the faintest whisper of a response from Angie.

It doesn’t help that my mind keeps turning to the feeling of my palm, wrapped around Bo’s strong, steady arm. His muscles are stronger and his arm smoother than I expected, which brings up my recollection of when I walked with Bhima, as Draupadi.
